Land Girl Style

The Women's Land Army put thousands of women to work on British farms during the Second World War, growing the food that kept the country going, and their practical, hard-wearing clothes have become one of the most recognisable looks of the 1940s. Our Land Girl style collection recreates it: corduroy breeches, pleated trousers, shirts and blouses, sweaters, waistcoats and headscarves, designed in-house and made in Yorkshire.

What did a Land Girl wear?

The uniform was breeches, a shirt and tie and a jersey, with sturdy boots and a hat, and dungarees or overalls for the dirtiest jobs. Practical, comfortable clothing was the point, but many Land Girls made it their own with a scarf or a turban tied in the hair. Our Landgirl breeches are cut in fawn, chocolate and deep olive corduroy (the fawn is very close in colour to the originals), with a side-button fastening and a cuff with brass eyelets.

How to put together a Land Girl outfit or costume

• Start with the breeches, or a pair of high-waisted pleated trousers. Putting together a land girl costume for a wartime weekend? This is the foundation.
• Add a collared shirt or blouse, then a sweater or cardigan for warmth.
• Finish with a turban or headscarf, sturdy boots and, if you like, a waistcoat.
