About This Collection

Vintage Skirts

The quickest way to place a vintage skirt is by its shape. Pencil, circle, pleated, bias-cut and maxi each belong to a decade, and each is built to sit at the natural waist, which is where vintage tailoring is at its most flattering. Ours are drawn from original garments and patterns and designed in-house, in crepe, jersey, corduroy, cotton and linen.

Vintage skirts by shape

  • Pencil skirts: the high-waisted, close-fitting 1950s classic, including a plaid version. Find them in 1950s skirts, or read about the perfect 1950s pencil skirt.
  • Circle and full skirts: a full-circle skirt that recreates Dior's New Look, and a gathered cotton full skirt in a reproduced 1950s print.
  • Pleated and swing skirts: the 1940s prim pleated skirt in corduroy, the whirlaway skirt made for dancing and the waterfall skirt with its asymmetrical drop. See 1940s skirts.
  • Swirl and flutter skirts: 1930s bias panels and flutter hems that reach mid to low calf: the classic long vintage skirt. See 1930s skirts.
  • Maxi skirts and A-lines: a 1970s maxi in bold prints and a corduroy A-line in the Ossie Clark mood. See 1970s skirts.

How to wear a vintage skirt

Tuck in a vintage blouse and add a jacket: the waistband sits on the natural waist, so a tucked-in top shows the shape off, and a high waist with a skirt that skims the hip is flattering on most figures. For a pencil-skirt look with a modern edge, the pencil line looks collection shows more ways to style one. UK sizes 8 to 18, and many skirts go up to a 24; the size guide has the measurements.
