Wide-leg, high-waisted and effortlessly elegant - our 1930s-inspired trousers draw on the decade when women first truly claimed the trouser as their own. Marlene Dietrich would approve.

1930s Trousers

Women in trousers were still a talking point in the 1930s, and the decade did more than any other to make them fashionable. Our 1930s trousers (or 1930s pants, if you're reading from the States), made in our Yorkshire factory from our own designs, cover the whole story: high-waisted Marlene trousers, culottes, pleated shorts, sailor pants and ski pants, in wool, twill and natural fibres.

Did women wear trousers in the 1930s?

Yes, though mostly for leisure at first. Beach pyjamas, lounge pants and wide-leg palazzo trousers arrived with the seaside and sporting craze of the decade, and film stars such as Marlene Dietrich made trousers a symbol of independence. The wide-leg, high-waisted trouser had become a chic, casual choice by the end of the 1930s, and it is the shape we still call 1930s style today.

Which 1930s trousers suit you?

  • Marlene trousers are high-waisted with a full, wide leg. They lengthen the leg and look wonderful with a tucked-in blouse.
  • Culottes and pleated shorts are cooler, sportier options for summer, inspired by the beach and the lido.
  • Sailor pants bring the nautical trend of the decade into the everyday. See our nautical 1930s collection.
  • Ski pants and plus fours in wool are for country walks and cold weather. Pair with a jumper and a beret.

Not sure which style to choose? Our guide to which vintage-style trousers are right for you compares swing pants, sailor slacks, yoke pants and pleated trousers by body shape, and vintage 1930s-style shorts covers the summer options. Sizes start at a UK 8 and run to an 18, with selected styles up to 24. Complete the look with our 1930s blouses and 1930s suits, or read the 1930s style guide.
