1976: Celebrating 50 Years of Style

1976: Celebrating 50 Years of Style

We're all about exploring glamour. In our second capsule collection of the year, we turn our attention to the supreme glamour of 1976! Inspired by BIBA, Ossie, Celia Birtwell and the return to decadence.

Whilst this is a break away from what we are 'known' for, it remains one of my favourite eras in fashion and is part of our direction towards covering more of the 20th Century. I  love of these designs probably because the designers themselves were turning their heads back to the glamour of the 1930s and putting their own 'take' on it. They were responding to a desire for glamour to come back.

Again, as a caveat - this is through the Foxy perspective rather than the explicit recreation of these amazing styles.

This is a year that sits right in the heart of one of fashion’s most expressive, glamorous and liberated decades. And, as it happens, this year marks 50 years since 1976, which makes it feel like the perfect moment to revisit and reimagine this incredible era through the House of Foxy lens.

If you’ve been with us for a while, you’ll know we’re best known for our love of the 1930s and 1940s - and that isn’t changing. Those eras will always be a huge part of who we are. But our passion has always been for vintage style as a whole, and for the many decades that shaped the way women dress, move and express themselves.

Mid 1970s Decadence
1976 sits right in the heart of one of fashion’s most exciting decades. So much happened style wise in the 1970s and we are firmly held in the mid 70s (after hippy and bell bottoms and into an era of its own vintage inspired). An antidote to the minimal lines of the 1960s, a turnaway from the fluff of the 50s and homage to the glamour of what came before. The 1970s were about freedom, movement, and personality. Clothes became more expressive, more relaxed, more sensual - and often more daring. It was an era of fluid silhouettes heavily influenced by the 1920s, 1930s & 40s , dramatic sleeves, plunging necklines, rich prints often influenced by art deco designs (check out Celia Birtwell), and a sense that fashion should move with you, not hold you still.

As a dreamer, glamour and decadence are stories I constantly move towards - I think this is why I've loved vintage fashion and costume for as long as I can remember. This collection is heavily inspired by some of my favourite designers and labels from the 1970s - Ossie Clarke, Biba, and Bus Stop - names that defined a certain kind of effortless yet sumptuous glamour and creative confidence. They dressed women who wanted to be seen, who loved drama and romance, and who weren’t afraid to make an entrance. That spirit runs right through this collection.

The collection was shot in our new wee studio - dressed to emulate the backdrops of BIBA's iconic imagery of the time. Gold, black, satin, beads, leopard. This was our first play with the idea of selecting a year and since this was a 50th celebration - we wanted to give it special treatment.

We anticpate working on our 100th year collection soon - a homage to 1926.

Rather than recreating the 1970s piece by piece, we’ve taken what we love most about the era and filtered it through House of Foxy: flattering cuts, beautiful fabrics, wearable vintage style, and pieces designed to make you feel amazing when you put them on. You will find many new styles here including The Bianca Pant Suit - a fabulous new high waisted trouser, the Venus Dress which is a modern take on classic disco silhouettes and Studio 54, a personal favourite that I wanted to keep for myself...but couldnt! :-)

This collection is a celebration - of an era, of its influence, and of how timeless great design really is, even 50 years on.  We can’t wait for you to experience it.

Explore the new collection now and discover the pieces that will become part of your own story. Whether you’re drawn to the drama, the romance, or the effortless glamour of the era, we hope you find something that makes you feel completely, unapologetically fabulous.

As always, thank you for being part of the House of Foxy story. We can’t wait to see how you wear 1976.

Much love from Yorkshire!
