About This Collection

1940s Vintage Fashion

1940s fashion was shaped by wartime restrictions - fabric was rationed, Paris couture came to a standstill, and utility clothing rules dictated what could be made. Designers responded with clever pattern-cutting instead: draping, peplums and gathered shoulders that gave even the simplest utility dress a flattering, structured silhouette with padded, squared shoulders and a slightly raised waist.

Our 1940s fashion pieces bring these same details to today's wardrobe - tea dresses, knee-length swing skirts, tailored shirt-waister dresses and bolero jackets, all cut with the era's precise, practical elegance. It's a decade defined by making do brilliantly, and it's just as wearable now as it was in 1945.

What did women wear in the 1940s?

The 1940s wardrobe was built from a few hard-working pieces that mixed and matched:

  • 1940s dresses: tea dresses, shirt-waisters and swing dresses, floral and flared
  • Blouses: sweetheart and shirt blouses with gathered shoulders, tucked in at a high waist
  • Swing trousers: high-waisted, wide-legged and turned up at the hem
  • Skirts: pleated and flared, hitting just below the knee
  • Suits and jackets and coats: padded shoulders, nipped waists and neat buttons

1940s outfits to try

For the classic day look, wear a tea dress with a cardigan, a headscarf or snood and low wedges. For the practical wartime look, tuck a blouse into swing trousers and add a jacket, like our Land Girl style or 1940s utility style collections. And for evening, borrow from the movies with film noir elegance: sculpted shoulders, dark colours and red lipstick.

Wartime fashion and utility clothing

Britain's utility scheme of 1941 set strict rules on how much fabric a garment could use, and even how many buttons, pleats and trims it could carry. The clothing was marked with the CC41 label. Early utility styles were plain, so in 1942 designers were brought in to improve them, and the elegant 1940s silhouette was the result. Alongside it, 'make do and mend' taught women to rework what they already owned. The story is told in full in our 1940s style guide, and Fashion on the Ration takes a look at an exhibition of wartime clothing.
