1940s fashion was shaped by wartime restrictions — fabric was rationed, Paris couture came to a standstill, and utility clothing rules dictated what could be made. Designers responded with clever pattern-cutting instead: draping, peplums and gathered shoulders that gave even the simplest utility dress a flattering, structured silhouette with padded, squared shoulders and a slightly raised waist.
