Our best-selling 1940s swing trousers were ten years in the making. Adapted from a late-1930s pattern and tweaked for the modern figure, they are high-waisted, wide-legged and turned up at the hem, with four shell-look buttons at the side. What are swing trousers?

Swing trousers (or swing pants) are the high-waisted, wide-leg trousers of the 1930s and 40s, so comfortable to move in that they are perfect for dancing. The rise of sports casual clothing and, later, women's war work made trousers a normal part of daily life, and the shape stayed. Deep front pleats, a turn-up and a side fastening are the details to look for in an authentic 1940s pair.
