An elegant new addition to the 1940s collection - a new tea dress that flatters and has some stunning details.
Another winning combination of top quality craftmanship combined with a plethora of features and topped of with a vintage style fabric that behaves as it should.
This is a most flattering cut influenced by the the late 1930s dress styles worn from 1938 through into the wartime period. This dress has been designed to be as faithful as possible to these styles. This is a silhouette with a strong shoulder shape which we have enhanced by the sleeve design style, shoulder pad and a high neckline.
You will notice the lovely style details of the shirring at the shoulder and the pleats under the bust into the V shape waist panel. This has a figure enhancing effect.
Key Features Include:-
- high neckline with back keyhole detail
- shirring detail shoulder & pleats under bust
- short sleeves with tuck at cuff and gathers into shoulder
- small shoulder pad
- sweeping 7-gore skirt
- side zip
- lined skirt
The fabrics is a mid weight 100% rayon (viscose) and as such gathers beautifully into yokes and under bust - is similar to the fabrics worn at this time. Lining is a woven viscose.
Proudly made in the UK
Fabric: 100% Viscose throughout
Washing instructions: dry clean only (we recommend dry cleaning due to the bias cut panels in the skirt & skirt lining which can become mis-shapen after washing and in particular line drying)
Length from natural waist: approx 25 inches
Fit Class - Semi-fitted
"skims the body so that is follows shape and may have close fitting areas (e.g. waist)"
This dress is free fitting on hips due to the swing skirt. The bust area is fairly generous but will gape if the bust is too full. Waist band is fitted and for this reason, we strongly suggest that you select your size through the waist measurements.
Style suits most shapes.
Fabric has no stretch.

Because of the brilliant Kingfisher color, I decided to take a risk and buy this dress. I was worried that it would be too long in the waist and the sleeves. (I am just under 5ft tall.) Well, much to my delight it fits really well in every way. The color is so universally flattering and even deeper in person. This Girl Friday dress can take you through the work-week right into a special Friday night out. Thank you HOF.
I knew I would love this dress. When I saw it on the HoF's FB page I thought of a dress worn by Ginger Rogers in a late '30s movie, "Carefree". Such a flattering cut, and lovely details: the slightly padded shoulders, the nipped waist, the short but not too short sleeves. The colour is gorgeous, I hope it will be made in several other colours (what about black? Always a favourite). Size indications are correct: it should definitely be chosen through the waist measurements. Its length is true to the era (late 30s) and therefore not much under the knee (I'm 5'3.78).
